frequently asked questions

EnergyShield® offers a strong combination of high R-value, thin profile, system compatibility, and product variety, allowing designers to tailor insulation solutions to specific wall assemblies and project requirements.

No — this is a common myth. Polyiso does not stop working in cold weather. This misconception comes from how insulation is compared in laboratory testing. Polyiso’s published R-value is measured at a mean temperature of 75°F (24°C), but real wall assemblies experience a range of temperatures, not a constant cold condition. When used as continuous insulation (ci) in exterior wall assemblies, polyiso performs effectively across seasonal conditions. Products like Atlas EnergyShield® are widely used in cold and mixed climates, including throughout Canada, and are accepted by building codes and design professionals.
Exposure limits vary by product. EnergyShield Pro and Pro Plus are designed for extended exposure during construction, while standard boards should be covered within the manufacturer’s specified timeframe.

EnergyShield® is compatible with a wide range of cladding systems, including rainscreen assemblies, masonry veneer, metal panels, fiber cement, EIFS, and stucco.

Foil-faced boards provide maximum thermal performance, while glass-mat faced products (EnergyShield CG, Pro, Pro Plus) offer improved durability, dimensional stability, and compatibility with adhered air barrier systems.

EnergyShield® is polyisocyanurate (polyiso) rigid foam insulation, which is a closed-cell foam with a high R-Value (typically 6.0-6.5) per inch compared to many other rigid or batt insulation types.
